Venice continues to enchant visitors from across the globe with its unique geography, fascinating history, elegant facades and palaces – and of course, the iconic Grand Canal. I returned to this magnificent city for just a few days in early May and was greeted by balmy, bright weather that triggered lots of happy memories from past visits.
Here are a few images from my short stay in this most elegant corner of Italy:
Tourists watch a classic Venetian Gondola breeze by St. Mark’s Square.
The narrow canals and waterways of Venice are often eerily quiet and serene.
Venice’s palaces feature astonishing artwork and facades.
Palaces adorn much of Venice’s Grand Canal.
Beautifully preserved – arched walkways adorn the area in and around St. Mark’s Square – often joined by bridges across the maze of canals.
The perfect place to watch the world go by in St. Mark’s Square
St. Mark’s Square is the focal point for any visitor to Venice. Iconic, captivating and steeped in history.
Timeless and elegant – Gondolas moored at St. Mark’s Square with San Giorgio Maggiore in the background.
Burano is one of the principal islands on the Venetian lagoon and is famed for its colourful houses and tranquil atmosphere.
The island of Burano provides the perfect antidote to the busy, bustling streets of Venice – across the lagoon.
The whole colour spectrum is represented amongst the houses of Burano.
Legend has it that Burano’s uniquely coloured houses were painted in this way so that fisherman returning from sea could spot them even during thick fog.
Santa Maria della Salute bathed in late evening light on the Grand Canal.
